Backridge Fencing Ltd
– Building Strong Foundations

Empowered by the North King Country Development Trust

When you grow up working the land, hard work and perseverance become second nature. For Teira (Terra) Gill, those values have shaped not just his work ethic, but also the creation of his business - Backridge Fencing Ltd, established in April 2023.

Born and raised in Ōparure, and a proud Te Kuiti High School former student, Teira began his career in a shearing gang before learning the ropes under local contractor Troy Brooky of King Country Fencing. With encouragement from family, friends, and his partner Chalet Bidois, who grew up in Piopio and now manages the administration and bookkeeping,  Teira took the leap into business ownership.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who believed in us and helped bring this vision to life,” Teira says. “We couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Fencing that stands the test of time

Backridge Fencing Ltd services the Waitomo District and surrounding areas, specialising in:

  • Conventional and electrical fencing

  • Post and rail fencing

  • Residential fencing

  • Cattle yards and retaining walls

What sets Backridge Fencing apart is its commitment to quality craftsmanship and structural integrity — fences built not just to look good, but to last. With one full-time staff member, Caleb, Teira takes pride in training others and maintaining a high standard of workmanship across every project.

“Drawing on deep local roots in Te Kūiti and Piopio, we deliver exceptional fencing solutions across the King Country and Maniapoto rohe. With a dedication to quality and craftsmanship, we build fences that stand the test of time.”

Growing skills, growing a business

With support from the North King Country Development Trust (NKCDT), Teira and Chalet received funding for Xero accounting training and Health & Safety certification, both vital to running a safe and sustainable business.

The Xero course gave Teira valuable confidence in managing business finances, quoting, and invoicing.

“I’ve learned how to itemise quotes properly and turn them straight into invoices once they’re accepted,” he explains. “It saves time and makes sure deposits are in before work begins.”

The Health & Safety training, using the cloud-based platform SafetySeek, has been another game-changer. The system allows Teira to manage all health and safety requirements online, from tracking hazards and recording incidents to monitoring equipment and creating site-specific safety plans for clients.

“It’s so handy having everything in one place — no more piles of paperwork,” says Teira. “It helps us stay compliant and professional when working with farmers and corporate clients.”

Looking ahead

Teira is eager to continue upskilling and developing his business, particularly in online marketing and Google Business tools. He also values the business mentoring provided through NKCDT.

“When you start a business, you know your trade — but not always the business side. The mentoring really helped us plan, understand company structures, and start off the right way.”

With a growing social media following, Teira shares fencing tips, techniques, and fun facts — educating others about the craft he’s passionate about.

“Did you know a strainer on an average 8-wire fence has to withstand around 1.2 tonnes of wire tension?”

A local business with strong roots

Backridge Fencing Ltd is more than a business — it’s a testament to local initiative, family support, and the power of community-driven funding. With NKCDT’s backing, Teira and Chalet have turned their vision into a thriving enterprise that not only builds strong fences but also strengthens the fabric of the North King Country.

“If you’re thinking about starting or growing a business, NKCDT can really help. The training and mentoring made a huge difference for us — it’s been a big step forward.”
